2019/20 School Year Launch

A Note from Pastor Joe...

If your house is anything like mine right now, it is a little bit of a struggle trying to launch from summer back into the school year. Linda and I sat down last night and synced up our schedules – making sure that every band concert and Parent/Teacher Conference was in my calendar. The start of the school year can be overwhelming!

I want to encourage you to consider the spiritual growth of your son or daughter a top priority for your family. My hope is that you might sit down and plan out your year with Collide, Impact, LifeGroups, and Parent Equip as high priority items. This post has a lot of content, but it is all to help you parent your child with intentionality - use it!

Lets revisit the 216 months that I mentioned in the video above. From the time your son or daughter was born until they reach age 18, you have 216 months of influence in their life – months that you will never get back. So…

If you have a 12 year old, 144 months are gone – you have 72 left.

If you have a 13 year old, 156 months are gone – you have 60 left.

If you have a 14 year old, 168 months are gone – you have 48 left.

If you have a 15 year old, 180 months are gone – you have 36 left.

If you have a 16 year old, 192 months are gone – you have 24 left.

If you have a 17 year old, 204 months are gone – you have 12 left.

And if you have an 18 year old, well, independence is just a few months away.

Why am I saying this? Why remind you of the months that are gone and the minimal time you have left? In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul says,

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil” (emphasis added)

When you see how much time you have left, you tend to do more with the time you have now. As parents we must follow Paul’s instructions to make good use of the time – why? Because the days are evil! While I hope that you have influence on your children for the rest of their life, the fact of the matter is that influence changes once they become adults. We get one shot - let’s make the best use of the time!

On the journey with you,

Pastor Joe
The team in Collide is really excited about using the new City Catechism this year and we hope that you will join us on this journey. We think that the tools we provide will be helpful in the process of inviting your son or daughter to new life in Christ. Here is how we plan to use the NCC (New City Catechism) Curriculum and how we hope you will engage the process.

NCC is set up to be done of 52 weeks. We know that there a few weeks when there is no Collide due to holidays or CVCYouth overnight events. We also plan to take a break from the NCC in the summer while schedules are all over the place. So, we slimmed the catechism down to 33 weeks running from September - May.

Download the schedule below to make sure you stay with us at home.

The service design of Collide will also change a bit this year. Students will still come to room 104/106 for announcements, games, and worship every week. However, the teaching format will rotate each week.

On one week the NCC curriculum will be taught to the entire group of 6th-8th graders - often by pastor Joe.

The next week, however, the curriculum/teaching will be delivered by LifeGroup leaders in the smaller, more hands-on, LifeGroup environment. When you look at the schedule, all weeks in bold are when teaching is collective, and those not in bold indicate that teaching will be in LifeGroups.

Here is the schedule that we will follow. Each Sunday we will introduce a new question and answer. We hope you will use the tools below to continue the conversation and learning throughout the week.

We all know that parenting didn’t come with an instruction book. The Bible does give us some insight into parenting, but there isn’t a specific verse explaining how to talk with your son about puberty or about how to walk with your daughter battling a learning disability. Peter, Paul, and James don’t give us the answers to how, exactly, we should discipline or what to do when our kids don’t seem to want anything to do with us.

CVCYouth is proud and excited to announce a new ministry for parents – hosted by parents. Parent Equip will be hosted by Sola and Felicia Oshunniyi, Duane and Holly Myatt, and Larry and Thea Domzalski. These three couples have 13 kids between them – several with kids of their own – all the way down to 9th grade. You won’t want to miss their experience and wisdom coupled with the excellent curriculum from Doug and Cathy Fields – Intentional Parenting: 10 Ways to be an Exceptions Parent in a Quick Fix World.

We have designed Parent Equip with you in mind. That means, you don’t have to buy a book, the time commitment is low, you don’t have homework or reading to do, and each session stands on its own so that if you miss one – no big deal – just show up next time!
