We kicked off the summer at Collide today with a new series called The Greatest Stories Ever Told, which is all about the parables of Jesus.  Often we enjoy good stories as a source of entertainment, but the stories or parables that Jesus told were always intended to teach a lesson. As we begin this study on parables, two questions that we will continue to come back to in Collide are:

  1. What are the comparisons I am supposed to make?
  2. What truth am I supposed to learn?

Today we took a look at the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8:4-8. Jesus is telling a story of a farmer that spreads seeds, which falls on different types of soil. That is actually the same text that Rick Duncan spoke out of in the main service, so if you listened to his message you should compare notes with your middle schooler!

Pastor Joe broke down some of the key elements of the story and walked the students through how to interpret the different elements. Here are some of the interpretations of each type of soil:

  1. Road = Hard Heart
  2. Rocks = Hard Things
  3. Thorns = Negative Influences
  4. Good Soil = Willing to grow

In this parable, Jesus is comparing the soil to our hearts. The seed of the Word of God that is planted is received differently by each of our hearts. Joe challenged each student to consider this: What kind of heart do you have?

That question takes a serious self assessment in order to answer honestly. We encourage you to continue to work through this with your student and consider the following prayers for further follow up and study:

  • Jesus, soften my heart... (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
  • Jesus, increase my faith... (1 Peter 2:2-3)
  • Jesus, clear the clutter... (1 John 2:15-17)
  • Jesus, produce more fruit... (John 15:4-5)

This is an exciting and busy time as school is coming to a close. Congratulations to all of our Seniors who graduated!  We are so proud of each of your accomplishments!!!

This week was a transition into the summer schedule, so we took a break at Impact. Next Sunday we will begin our Impact Summer Sessions, Sunday at 9:30 am in Room 104.
